Al-Khansa
Mukhadram era (Pre-Islamic and Early Islamic)
Tumadir bint 'Amr ibn al-Harith, widely known by the epithet "Al-Khansa," was a legendary 7th-century Arab poet and one of the most influential female voices in classical Arabic literature. Born in Najd, she is classified as a Mukhadram poet, having lived through both the Pre-Islamic (Jahiliyya) and Early Islamic eras. She gained immense fame for her poignant elegies (ritha') mourning her brothers, Sakhr and Mu'awiyah, who perished in tribal conflicts. Her grief was so profound that it defined her early poetic career. In 629 CE, she embraced Islam after meeting Prophet Muhammad, who reportedly admired her eloquence. Al-Khansa is also celebrated for her stoicism; when all four of her sons were martyred at the Battle of Qadisiyah, she famously expressed gratitude for their sacrifice rather than despair. She died around 645 CE, leaving a lasting legacy as the 'Mother of Martyrs' and the greatest poetess of elegies.
