Kuthayyir Azza

Kuthayyir ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Khuza'i, universally known as Kuthayyir Azza, was a preeminent Arab poet of the Umayyad era. Born in Medina circa 660 AD, he became legendary for his "Udhri" (platonic) devotion to Azza bint Humayl, whose name became inseparable from his own. His poetry is celebrated for its emotional sincerity and linguistic mastery, bridging the gap between romantic ghazal and formal panegyrics. Despite his Kaysanite Shia political leanings, Kuthayyir maintained influential ties with Umayyad caliphs, including Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz. Renowned for his diminutive stature and sharp wit, he spent his life traveling across the Hejaz, Egypt, and Syria. He passed away in Medina around 723 AD, leaving behind a diwan that remains a cornerstone of classical Arabic literature and a vital record of the early Islamic period's cultural landscape.
