Qays ibn al-Mulawwah

Qays ibn al-Mulawwah (645–688 AD), famously known as "Majnun Layla" (The Madman of Layla), was a legendary Bedouin poet from the Najd region of Arabia during the Umayyad era. He is the protagonist of one of the most celebrated tragic love stories in Arabic literature. Qays fell deeply in love with Layla al-Amiriyya from a young age, but her father refused their marriage after Qays publicly expressed his devotion through poetry, as tribal custom deemed such public declarations dishonorable. When Layla was married to another man, Qays descended into a state of obsession and despair, earning his nickname "Majnun." He spent the remainder of his life wandering the wilderness, composing soul-stirring verses about his unrequited love and grief. His poetry defined the "Udhri" genre of chaste, spiritual love. Qays's legacy transcends Arabic culture, profoundly influencing Persian, Turkish, and Indian literature.
