Qays ibn Dharih

Qays ibn Dharih al-Laythi al-Kinani (c. 625 – 680 CE), famously known as "Majnun Lubna" (the Madman of Lubna), was a celebrated Umayyad-era Arabic poet from the Hijaz region. He is a primary figure of "Udhri" poetry, a genre defined by chaste, platonic, and enduring love. His life was marked by his profound devotion to his wife, Lubna bint al-Hubab, whom he was tragically forced to divorce by his father because she was childless. Qays spent the remainder of his life in deep sorrow and longing, immortalizing his grief in some of the most poignant and delicate verses in classical Arabic literature. Historically, he is also noted as the foster brother of Al-Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. His poetic legacy remains a cornerstone of the Arabic romantic tradition, symbolizing eternal fidelity and emotional sincerity.
