Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib

Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib (c. 567–640 CE) was a distinguished companion and the paternal aunt of Prophet Muhammad. Born in Mecca into the noble Banu Hashim clan, she was the full sister of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib and the mother of Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam. A formidable poetess known as the "Poetess of the Hashemites," she composed renowned elegies for her father, her brother, and the Prophet. Safiyya was celebrated for her extraordinary courage, famously becoming the first Muslim woman to kill an enemy combatant while defending a fortress during the Battle of the Trench. She was among the early emigrants to Medina and a narrator of Hadith. She passed away during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab in 20 AH and was buried in the Al-Baqi' cemetery.
