Urwa ibn Hizam

Urwa ibn Hizam ibn Muhajir al-Dhanni was a celebrated Arab poet from the Banu Udhra tribe, renowned as a pioneer of the "Udhri" (chaste) poetic tradition. Born in the Hijaz, he is legendary for his tragic devotion to his cousin, Afra. Although they were raised together, Urwa's poverty prevented their marriage, and Afra was wed to a wealthy man from Syria. Urwa traveled to Yemen to seek a dowry, but returned to find her gone. Despite a final, respectful encounter in Syria, he returned broken-hearted and died of grief around 650 AD (30 AH) during the Caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan. His verses, characterized by profound longing and emotional purity, remain a cornerstone of classical Arabic love poetry, immortalizing him as one of the great "Martyrs of Love."
